Do puppets dream of wooden sheep? So what if puppets dream of wooden sheep Do they even dream? Do they even sleep? Or do they count sheep, electrical, wooden or fleshy just to fall asleep? Wooden sheep crash into wooden fences Wooden sheep crash into fleshy fences The guts spill Spill, spill, spill, spill Is this even a dream? Is this even a sleep? Do puppets dream of wooden sheep?

Does every puppet need a puppeteer? Does every puppet need a puppeteer? Even those that have no strings attached? Do the puppets fall down and stay motionless, without a hand up their back? Or do they come alive at midnight like toys in the attic? Does every puppet need a puppeteer? Does every puppet need a puppeteer?

about

Imagination, Dreams, Tales, Stories, Myths and Fables

Part A
A Puppet sat on a shelf in a workshop musing on the nature of life. Seeking an adventure, they climbed down from the shelf and hopped aboard a magical flying armchair. Puppet travelled a great distance witnessing many beautiful sights and colours along the way. Eventually the armchair landed on Corstorphine Hill.

After a short wander, Puppet glimpsed a bird’s nest which had been destroyed by a woodland fire. “What had caused the fire?” Puppet wondered. “Was it completely natural causes, deliberately caused by humans or foolish carelessness?”. Puppet continued to contemplate this as they explored the woodland area.

Eventually, Puppet started to get hungry and thirsty. Luckily, they had brought a flask of tea and some biscuits. They took a seat on the hill and admired the lovely view, whilst drinking a nice cup of tea and munching on a biscuit.

Having finished said items, Puppet heard a rustling in the bush next to them. Upon investigating closer, a small caterpillar came into view, hastily devouring the leaves on which it sat. This reminded Puppet of a children’s book which they had only seen in German: ‘Die Kleine Raupe Nimmersatt’. Caterpillar caught sight of Puppet and asked, “Do puppets dream of wooden sheep?”, a question they had pondered for quite some time. “I can’t speak for all puppets”, Puppet replied. “But sometimes I dream of wooden sheep crashing into fences. However, I do not know what this means…”.

Part B
Caterpillar was moved by Puppet’s words and decided to join them on their adventure. It seemed clear to the pair that they were now embarking on some sort of quest together. Walking past a graveyard, their thoughts turned to the dead. “We stand and we build on the shoulders of dead smaller people”, one of them said.

The two characters climbed another hill to its highest peak which they then sat atop. Looking out at the bright red sunset, Puppet thought back to the flying armchair and how they made sure not to fly too close to the sun on their initial journey. That could have led to disaster much like poor Icarus where the wax in his wings had melted. The pair of adventurers shared some tea together, Puppet drinking out of their cup and Caterpillar drinking from a leaf they had found. Caterpillar of course ate the entire leaf as well. Puppet laughed at their new friend, whilst eating some rather nice chocolate.

Suddenly there were sounds of buzzing and chirping in the distance. It was a sign that the locusts and crickets were coming. Caterpillar was scared and knew they had to leave. However, Puppet was not yet ready for their own adventure to end. Full of respect and love for one another, they parted ways, Caterpillar scurrying off into the distance. The travellers knew they would meet again one day.

Puppet sat on the hill for a smidge longer before eventually standing up. They looked out to the sky and sure enough, it was filled with swarms of locusts and crickets, hungry for more after consuming most of the harvest. Walking down the other side of the hill, Puppet reached the end of a windy path. At the end of the path was a beach. A sailboat, containing nothing but mouldy peaches, was parked in the water. Puppet quickly clambered aboard the boat and unhooked the rope which had been keeping it in place. The sail caught the wind and the boat slowly started to move along the water. “Does every puppet need a puppeteer?” mused Puppet, sailing away into the mountains, not knowing where the tides would take them.
